What Is your favorite pastime? music? books? traveling or watching movies?.

For me its movies and books. Nothing beats coming home after a hard days work, lazy up on my 3 seater couch with breaded sea food and binge on movies till I fall asleep. Naturally I prefer watching good African movies. So imagine my joy when I discovered there is a place where I could go see all the best and latest movies for free ….Film Festivals.

As a film maker, going to see movies at the festivals have greatly impacted my work, not only was I seeing the best curated movies, I got to listen to the cast or crew during Q/As, discuss the ideas and challenges behind making such movies.

If you enjoy watching movies then here are a few reasons you should attend film festivals

  1. DISCOVER NEW TASTES
Hello Rain Directed by C.J Fiery Obasi

Film festivals curate variety of films & documentaries. People think African film makers are only good at Dramas. Have you seen Hello, Rain? an afro-futurism short film. Film festivals are a good place to discover new genres of film & filmmakers with a zing, There exists a plethora of African creativity, talent and movie entertainment outside of our regular cinema/Tv platforms.

2. SEE THE LATEST FILMS FIRST FOR FREE

five fingers for Marseilles Directed by Michael Mathews

I admit, I haven’t seen FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLES. My bestie has, she saw it at a festival in South Africa. Since its not coming to Nigerian cinema and not yet on Netflix, my best bet would be to wait for a festival run in Nigeria. if it does come to Nigeria. I will keep you informed.

3. MEET NEW, LIKE MINDED PEOPLE

Rafiki Directed by Wanuri Kahiu

Some times, the best part of watching a movie is discussing the movie after. Discussing SEW THE WINTER TO MY SKIN with my new South African friend was very enjoyable and gave me a deeper understanding of film.

4. GET DISTRIBUTION FOR YOUR FILM

Actors, Directors, Producers, Sales agents and Distributors are amongst the people you usually meet at film festivals. This is the best networking ground for a filmmaker, especially for an independent filmmaker. LIONHEART is rumored to have been acquired at the Toronto International film festival by Netflix.

5. FILM FESTIVAL AFTER PARTY/CLOSING CEREMONY ARE BOMB

Whats better than free food and free drinks…Like seriously, why do I go to weddings every saturday? Dancing and drinking with celebrities, getting cast in a movie project because a director likes your dance moves and can totally see it in a movie scene. Film festival parties are awesome.
