The purpose of a movie poster or artwork is to incite awareness and generate hype for the film. A movie poster should reflect the tone and style of a movie, i.e a horror movie should have a dark poster, a rom-com should have bright poster. But this post is not about telling you how to make your poster creatively. That is totally up to you.
A movie poster can be the best way to captivate an audience and leave them wanting more.
As a film curator, many of my content revolve around film posters and trailer, and certain criteria like the film poster will make me choose a film to include in my list.
The movie FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLES (South Africa) Directed by MICHAEL MATTHEWS does poster well and has all the types of posters , this makes it an easy choice to use on different kinds of posts thereby creating awareness and generating hype.
- THE PORTRAIT POSTER
This is the most common type of poster. It can be teaser poster, official poster or character poster etc. Depending on its purpose It can contain everything: Movie title, tagline, cast and crew names, production company, release date, laurels, reviews.
2. THE LANDSCAPE
Landscape posters work for facebook cover, featured images, social cards etc. Its all about more visibility for your film. For my newsletters, I always make sure to select a film with a good landscape poster for my social card, because the sizing fits better than a portrait that will get cropped out.
3. THE PLAIN POSTER
Plain Posters are excellent for Advertising. Too many texts make a picture seem too busy which is distracting for ads. Have too many texts for your poster? no problem, fix it all in the portrait official poster. Then make a plain and simple one for advertising. Name of Movie and Tagline only.
4. THE CHARACTER POSTER
Character Posters are posters featuring an Individual cast in movie. It is common in big budget movies with popular cast and often reflects the quality of the character . This type of poster usually contains the name of the actor, the name of the character played, movie title and tagline. (Release date and venue optional*)
Fans of a character or fans of an actor playing a character easily identify with character posters.
5. THE LAUREL(S) OR REVIEW(S) POSTER
Laurels make everything look legit. It signals that your project is worth the watch. Laurel or Review poster is like a post movie poster, so your basically re-advertising your same poster to your fans, this time with accolades…it should be called the bragging poster.
Name your posters with the Movie Title when you release it online. When it gets downloaded, its easy to find amidst other downloads.
